Every product launch is the worst episode of Grand Designs.
You know the one. Couple starts with a budget, a deadline, and a dream. Three years later they are living in a caravan, the builder has ghosted, the planning permission fell through, and someone is definitely getting divorced.
Product launches are the same. Whatever budget and deadline you have, forget about them.
Not because the packaging designer is slow. Because reality has other plans.
The Reason Your Timeline Will Slip (And It Is Not Your Designer)
Every single delay I have seen on a product launch in the last decade has come from somewhere other than design.
My protein bar client waited nine months for his food scientist to perfect the recipe. Then there was a shortage in ingredients. Then shipping delays.
A current skincare client is stuck because the serum applicator printer in China keeps dragging things out. The applicator changed halfway through. Which meant the outer box had to change too. Which meant we paused design.
Formulations take time. Regulatory approvals take time. Prototype rounds take time. Sourcing sustainable materials takes time. Suppliers take time.
Design, in comparison, is the easy part.
Founders come to me stressed about the design timeline. They should be stressed about everything else.
When to Actually Hire a Packaging Designer
The right time to hire a packaging designer is during formulation. Not after.
Here is why.
In the six to eight weeks it takes your chemist or food scientist to finalise the product, I can complete strategy and design. During that same window we can figure out the vessel, the outer box, the mailer, the whole system. We can find a printer before design starts so I know the limitations of copy layout, the substrate, the finishes, the timelines they need for physical proofs.
By the time your formulation is ready, your packaging is ready to print.
If you wait until after formulation is done to start design, you are adding two to three months to your launch date on top of everything else.
Most founders get this wrong. They think design happens last. It should happen alongside.

What Founders Think Will Delay Things Versus What Actually Does
Founders think the designer is the bottleneck.
They think if they hire fast enough and push hard enough, the packaging will happen quickly.
Here is what actually holds product launches back:
Printer start dates. There is usually a two to four week queue for a decent printer, longer for anything specialty.
Physical proofs. You cannot approve a print run from a PDF. You need samples in hand. That is another two weeks minimum.
Custom components. My skincare client is waiting fifty days for her applicator. Fifty days. Not because anyone is being slow. Because that is how long custom manufacturing takes.
Regulatory checks. Every country has different rules for what has to appear on food, supplement, and skincare packaging. Miss one and you are reprinting.
Substrate sourcing. Sustainable materials, custom papers, specialty foils, none of these arrive overnight.
None of these are the designer. All of them are why your launch date will slip if you have not planned for them.
When Your Deadline Is Unrealistic
Sometimes a founder tells me their launch date and I tell them straight it is not going to happen.
Not because I am being difficult. Because I have seventeen years of experience watching what actually happens when founders push against physics.
If they still insist on the unrealistic deadline, I do not take the project.
That is not me being precious. That is me protecting both of us. A rushed packaging job is a bad packaging job. A bad packaging job costs the founder more money than a delayed launch ever would.
The founders I work with either adjust their timeline or find someone else. Both are fine outcomes. Neither ends up with a printer holding a botched job at 2am while everyone panics.

The Order of Operations If You Are Starting Now
If you are at the very beginning of your product journey and reading this, here is what to do.
Start with strategy first. That is me. Before you touch design, before you brief a printer, before you order samples.
In the strategy phase I uncover the bones of your brand. The heart and soul. The visual direction that will actually make you money and connect with the person who will buy it. You walk away with a playbook. A real checklist of everything that needs to happen and in what order.
Then I move into packaging design and act as your project manager. I email the printer. I coordinate the sample process. I manage the substrate selection. I track the timelines so you do not have to.
You focus on your formulation, your funding, your co-packer, your launch strategy. I handle everything that touches the physical product.
That is the difference between a launch that happens on time and one that slides into next year.
Ready to Start?
If your formulation is in progress and you are wondering when to bring a packaging designer in, the answer is now.
Not next month. Not when the recipe is final. Now.
Projects start at $9,000 USD. Strategy-led CPG packaging design for founders whose product is genuinely good but whose branding is holding them back.
