What is the difference between branding and marketing

Branding = the outfit.
Marketing = leaving the damn house.

It’s one of the biggest misconceptions in small business: people think branding and marketing are the same thing. Spoiler aler: they’re not. They’re more like cousins who show up to the same party but have totally different jobs.

What Is Branding?

Branding is who you are as a business. It’s everything people feel, think, and remember about you.

Your branding includes:

  • Your logo, colours, and typefaces
  • Your packaging and website
  • Your tone of voice and personality
  • The emotional connection your customers feel

Branding is why someone spots your product on a shelf and says, “Yep, that’s them.”
It’s what makes your Instagram post instantly recognisable before anyone even sees your name.

Why Branding Matters

Without branding, you’re forgettable – like a plain white t-shirt in a sea of plain white t-shirts. Great branding gives your business personality and makes people trust you before they even buy.

What Is Marketing?

Marketing is what you do to get your brand in front of people.

Your marketing includes:

  • Social media posts and ad campaigns
  • Email newsletters and promotions
  • Events, collaborations, and pop-up stalls
  • Google ads and influencer partnerships

Marketing is the loud part of business. It’s how you say, “Hey, I exist!”

Why Marketing Matters

Without marketing, you’re just standing in your kitchen looking fabulous and wondering why no one noticed.

Why You Need Both Branding and Marketing

Here’s the truth:

  • Branding gets you recognised and trusted.
  • Marketing gets you seen and chosen.

Do one without the other and you end up with:

  • Great branding but no reach (no one knows you exist).
  • Great marketing but no identity (people see you but don’t remember you).

When you invest in both, that’s when things click: people see you, know you, and actually want what you’re offering.

TL;DR

  • Branding = The outfit → how you look, sound, and feel.
  • Marketing = Leaving the house → the action that gets you noticed.
  • You need both if you want to stand out, be remembered, and actually make sales.

Homemade pizza

You know that moment when someone says, “Let’s make pizza at home!” and your first thought is Eww, David? Seriously, why? Every time, it ends up costing more than delivery, tastes like disappointment, and your kitchen looks like a scene from a natural disaster movie. And then, when the smoke clears, you realize the harsh […]

Read about packaging that stands out on store shelves I was in a founder forum recently. Someone had posted a photo of their fruit pouch packaging asking which tagline would work better. The packaging was beautiful. Soft, warm, illustrated. A little rabbit on the front, earthy tones, the kind of thing that makes you want […]

Do you want to work with the person who sold you the work or the person actually doing it? That’s the question nobody in the packaging design industry wants you to ask out loud. So I will. Packaging Design Agency vs Studio: The Honest Version You hired the agency. Great call with someone senior. Charming. […]

Finding a packaging designer is easy. The right packaging designer, the one who won’t quietly torch your launch is slightly harder. There are a lot of people on the internet who will put your logo on a pouch, call it packaging design, send you a Dropbox link, and wish you luck. Some of them are […]
